Jess' Story

Jess came onto the Greater Manchester Talent Match programme with low confidence, very limited life or work experience and no real idea what she wanted to do with her future.

At first she thought she might want to work in the beauty industry as she enjoyed talking to people and helping them feel good about themselves. She also wanted to improve her basic skills as she hadn’t gained any Level 1 qualifications in school. As a first step, Jess’ Talent Coach, Samantha Powers from Groundwork worked with her to improve her functional skills and help her work towards an apprenticeship or full time course.

Samantha Powers explains, “Jess went through a terrible trauma part way through our Greater Manchester Talent Match journey which set her back and reduced her confidence quite badly. But after spending a number of months working one-to-one and taking advantage of the Greater Manchester Talent Match opportunities, Jess decided that she would like to change her goals and develop a career in Health and Social Care working with older people.”

Jess also decided that she needed to work rather than go in to full time training. In order to do this, she needed help finding work where she could complete an NVQ as well as earning wages or find an apprenticeship program that would take her on.

After twelve months of engagement on the Greater Manchester Talent Match programme, Jess went into work at a local nursing home where they are willing to train her for her NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care.

Jess’s Talent Coach Samantha Powers from Groundwork said, “I am really pleased with Jess' progress over the last few months, she has really taken advantage of the opportunities that have been offered through the Talent Match Programme and I think she is well suited to her chosen line of work. She is always willing to try new things and has been a pleasure to work with throughout the scheme.”

Jess said, “I have really enjoyed being on the Talent Match programme, it has given me more confidence and pointed me in the right direction so that I now know what I want to do”
