World of Work Visit to the BBC: Tricks of the trade at MediaCityUK

Greater Manchester Talent Match young people at the BBC studios at MediaCity UK

Last month, Greater Manchester Talent Match young people and Talent Coaches visited the BBC at MediaCity UK.

This great opportunity to delve into the world of media and production was led by David Longworth, Apprenticeships and Training Schemes Manager at BBC North.

The World of Work visit gave the young people an opportunity to learn about the wide variety of different careers available at the BBC. One young person, Sarah, said: "It was good to see what the different departments' roles are. I gained a better understanding of what the BBC actually does and how they support young people by offering apprenticeships".

Sarah’s Talent Coach, Laura, added: “The visit to the BBC has definitely been inspiring for Laura. She has a better understanding of what media and journalism look like and the application process behind the BBC's range of apprenticeships, and work experience opportunities.”

The World of Work afternoon began at the sports studio, where participants learnt about lighting tricks and how sports news is filmed and edited. They then visited the ‘blue room’, and got hands on with cutting edge virtual reality technology. A tour of the North West Tonight set offered an insight into the world of broadcast journalism.

A follow-up support opportunity was also made available for the young people - to provide guidance with subsequent applications made to the BBC.
