Volunteer Befriender with Cyril Flint Volunteers

Opportunity Provider: Cyril Flint Befrienders

We are looking for volunteers to spend one or two hours per week with an elderly person living in their home.

From playing cards to taking a walk in the local park or chatting about shared interests, volunteering with Cyril Flint Volunteers is a truly rewarding and fantastic way to gain experience and make a genuine difference to other peoples lives.

With over 5 million elderly people living on their own, and 50% citing television as their main source of company, loneliness is an ever-present problem within our community (Campaign To End Loneliness).

Cyril Flint, an elderly pensioner living on his own in the Trafford area, was a classic example of one such individual. Having spent 20 lonely Christmas holidays on his own, since the passing of his wife, Cyril’s story not only evoked a wave of compassion within the community, but it also made us want to do something to help. Setting up an informal befriending service, designed to help prevent social isolation, seemed like the perfect solution. Since its creation, our scheme has grown throughout the Manchester area and we now have an increasing number of active volunteers throughout the community.

You don't need any experience and you will be fully supported by the Cyril Flint charity.

What tasks will the volunteers be required to do?

Visit an elderly person once a week – this is at a time to suit the volunteer and we aim to befriend volunteers with someone close by where possible.

What will volunteers gain from this opportunity?

This opportunity gives you the chance to meet new people and get involved in your community. This can be a great way to build confidence and gain new skills that could be valuable in the employment market. Befriending is very rewarding and we have seen some fanstatic friendships develop and flourish – and its flexible to suit you and only takes an hour a week.

Are there any specific skills and abilities required for this opportunity?

None really. It helps if you are interested in other people, are good listeners and are reliable.

Our training is relaxed, fun and informal. We run various sessions at various different locations. More information will be provided upon application. For those who are unable to attend a training session we can arrange a one to one session with you locally over a cup of tea and cake!
