Mentoring opportunity with Reachout

Opportunity Provider: ReachOut

ReachOut is a mentoring charity working with children in disadvantaged communities to raise aspirations and help them grow in character and competence. We improve self-confidence and develop numeracy, literacy, communication and memory skills whilst reinforcing our core values of fairness, self-control, good judgement and staying power. We do this through one-to-one mentoring with positive role models and team activities to promote leadership, trust and responsibility.

As a mentor we ask that you give 2 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months (usually October – May) and are committed, enthusiastic and positive. There are no specific skills and abilities required for this opportunity other than commitment to the project, enthusiasm and positivity.

What tasks will volunteers be required to do?

On each of our projects volunteers will spend an hour working one-to-one with a young person in a classroom environment, supporting them with their homework or English and Maths activities chosen by the Project Leader. All resources and answers will be provided by the Project Leader who is also there to support the mentors throughout the session.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to get involved with other activities in the second hour of the sessions designed to engage the young people and help them develop in character. The nature of the activities offered will depend on the project and in the past have included sport activities (such as football) as well as drama and crafting activities.

What will volunteers gain from this opportunity?

From this experience volunteers will have the chance to make a difference in their local communities as well as the opportunity to develop different transferrable skills and experiences that are vital when looking for future employment or training opportunities. ReachOut also offers full training and support with this opportunity, giving volunteers all of the information and guidance they need to successfully mentor a child. Furthermore, ReachOut organises great social events for volunteers and networking opportunities with our corporate partners.
