Rob's Story

Before joining Greater Manchester Talent Match, Rob, 22 from Rochdale, found himself lost in a whirlwind of boredom and no confidence.

Holly Lam-Moores, Rob’s Talent Coach from Greater Sport said, “With his heart in the right place, Rob had every intention of working and had the motivation and ambition to do so, he just didn’t know where to start”.

Rob found help and inspiration through the Get On Track programme lead by athletes from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and Link4Life in Rochdale. Through the programme, Rob gained a number of skills such as working and communicating within team environments and succeeded in passing Sports Leaders and First Aid qualifications.

Rob then decided to become part of the Greater Manchester Talent Match programme, which was to be the first step to making positive changes to his life and having a sense of direction. During his time on the programme, he was given support and guidance for applying for jobs, volunteering and training opportunities and given interview technique tips.

He also successfully completed a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification with PocketFit something that he says he would never have dreamed of trying to achieve 6 months prior to being with Greater Manchester Talent Match.

Rob embraced the support he was receiving and as a result could confidently hand his CV into employers, which he did. One day on his journey home he came across a local nursery and plucked up the courage to go inside and hand in his CV. After a short conversation with the manager he left but was then asked to return for a trial which he successfully passed.

Rob started work as an apprentice and was the only male working at the nursery.  As a part of the apprenticeship Rob was provided with all his training as a Level 2 Child Practitioner. He is now working full time at a nursery in Rochdale.

Rob’s life has now changed dramatically, he says, “I have always wanted to work with children, I love being in a routine and doing something I love every single day. I am also looking forward to starting the training Greater Manchester Talent Match gave me the confidence to do things I didn’t think I could do.”

Holly Lam-Moores, Rob’s Talent Coach said, “We think it’s safe to say that Greater Manchester Talent Match has had a huge, positive impact on Rob. We look forward to continuing in supporting him throughout his exciting journey. Good luck Rob!”
